Being a Mentally Tough Pitcher |
|
Pitching is mental!
Retaining full focus and concentration on the present situation is a big challenge for pitchers. How many times have we seen a Major League Pitcher allow a home run and then walk the next hitter?
The reason that keeping clear focus is the toughest challenge is that it is a continuous battle; low quality thoughts come into your brain quickly. If your mental anti-virus system isn’t working you will have to split your focus between those thoughts and your current task.
A problem that goes hand in hand with lack of control over one’s concentration is realizing that monitoring your thoughts and focus isn’t something that just happens naturally. Pitchers should approach the mental side of baseball with the same urgency and focus as they would put into their physical game. Why do you think most professional sports teams have sports psychologists? If those guys need them, there is a good chance that college athletes and below should invest some time learning this part of the game.
